Taylor Swift Calls John Mayer Presumptuous - What She Should Expect When Penning Songs about Old Flames

I was reading excerpts from Taylor Swift’s interview with Glamour magazine and found a portion of it comical. She said that John Mayer was a little “presumptuous” for thinking her song, Dear John was about him. I pulled up the lyrics and tried to see if John was completely out of line.

In my opinion, the following words below are the most notable that this song is about John:

Dear John, I see it all now that you’re gone
Don’t you think nineteen’s too young to be played with?
All the girls that you’ve run dry have tired, lifeless eyes

Taylor is now 22 and, according to her Wikipedia page, was “linked to John from late 2009 to early 2010.” This would put her right around 19 when this all happened. We can see this increases the likelihood she's writing about her fling with him.

Now, Dear John the movie, starring Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum, came out in October, 2010. Giving Taylor the benefit of the doubt, I thought it could be possible that she wrote the song for the movie. Yet, the lyrics don’t match the plot in the slightest. Even the phrase “Dear John” is when a woman’s leaving a man. This isn’t the scenario Taylor describes in her song which is basically how she was played.

Everyone who has directly asked Taylor whether the song is about John has received an answer along the lines of, “I’m going to continue writing about my personal life. People will speculate, but I’ll never tell them.” She neither affirms nor denies.

I know John has a reputation for kissing and telling. By right, he has no right to complain when it is done to him. But, Taylor’s coquettish responses about the matter coupled with calling John “presumptuous” is rather transparent. We can all look at the lyrics and the timeline and put two and two together. Just because John was “presumptuous” didn’t make him wrong.

The reason why I’m writing about this is because Taylor should understand that indirectly naming names will annoy her ex's when she puts her personal life out there for public consumption. They might even bash her in interviews like John with Rolling Stone where he outright said it was an abuse of her talent to do what she did. I argue that it’s an abuse of his fame to discuss his sexual dalliances with women in the manner he has.

Still, we shouldn't come down on men for kissing and telling and not hold women to the same standard. The music business is tough enough as it is. Taylor shouldn't make herself vulnerable to having an ex speak disparagingly about her with a major publication.

Some say, "Two wrongs don't make a right, but it does make us even." Here, my response is that no one wins and it all looks like a bitter cat fight between two ex-lovers. Taylor met John on his level and now looks immature. True, she's made money off of her heartbreak and good for her. I hope in the future, though, that she can find another way to achieve success without looking like a woman who wears her heart on her sleeve and is a victim of heartbreak.

Until next time...
