Nina Dobrev's Man Must Be Happy -- Can Women Change Moody Men?

Nina Dobrev has a prerequisite when it comes to the men who she dates. In the November issue of Self, Nina said that her man must be a happy person. Why? Because, “[Y]ou’ll laugh and enjoy life more,” Nina maintains. My takeaway is quite simple: No moody men! Who has the time?

Nina brought up an excellent point. All too often, my married clients or those in long-term relationships contact me and say, “My husband/boyfriend is so moody! I have a hard time with it. What can I do?”

This can be especially difficult when the woman is cheerful. She’ll be in a great mood while her partner is sullen. When this happens, it puts her on edge and makes her wonder if he’s unhappy with her. It's tempting to ask him, “What’s wrong?”

I’ll never forget how I started dating a man who I found so incredibly funny. While on our first date, he followed behind me singing Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel. He was crooning, “Hey pretty baby with the high heels on.” Everyone was staring at us and smiling and I was laughing hysterically. I thought he was perfect.

Two weeks later we were on a date and I swear he wasn’t the same man. He was attentive and sweet but not happy. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I thought maybe he was just having an off night. A few dates later, though, the moody man was still showing up. I couldn’t help it, but my interest switch shut off.

When women ask what they can do to get their man to act less moody. I say nothing. In fact, his mood is not her problem. Even if she threw him a ticker tape parade, his mood is exactly that – his mood. The only control she has is to decide whether she wants to stay with him.

On that note, women who play hard-to-get might be surprised with a ring four or five months into a relationship. It’s great knowing a man can’t wait to marry you. The flip side is that if you rush into it, you might not find out until after you marry that he’s quite moody.

I can’t answer whether it’s worth it for a woman to stay with a moody man. If it's important that he not be, do as Nina has and find out early on if you can. The man who is moody now will be the same way after you marry. If you plan on having children with him, it becomes even more important you discern whether this is something you can tolerate.

Until next time…
