Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher Getting a Dog – Why It’s a Bad Idea to Make This Commitment with a Boyfriend

I read a story today that Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are planning on adopting a dog together. They’ve been spotted at shelters looking for one. Supposedly, they want a big pup like a golden retriever or a Labrador .

As soon as I read it, I thought, “Oh wow, that’s not a good idea.” While the story is definitely “awww” worthy – love for doggies is a universal truth – it’s not a step I think Mila should take with Ashton. Doing so will send him the message she’s "just" that into the relationship.

When a couple gets a dog together, more often than not, it’s because they want to share responsibility for something. They embrace the idea of caring for a living and breathing thing that they can call theirs. If they aren’t ready to marry and have children, they’ll substitute an animal as their child. All in all, it's a huge commitment.

From where the woman sits, it’s not a good idea to do this with a man because it says to him that he can count on her always being there. This isn’t something a man should know unless he's proposed to her. As such, heavy actions involving commitment should come from him.

By the way, a loophole to this doesn’t exist in the event he offers up the idea to get the dog. It’s still in a woman’s best interest to say, “oh, such a cute idea, but I’m so busy, busy, busy, and wouldn’t have the time.” She shouldn't volunteer any additional information like, “But it’d be great if you got one.” Let him figure it out on his own.

Let’s say that the topic of getting a dog never came up but you really want one. This is fine. But, don't adopt or buy based on what he considers the ideal pup. If he loves chocolate labs but you want a beagle with big floppy ears, get the beagle. If you get the lab, he’ll obviously know what you’re up to and think you’re using it as a reason to become closer to him. You might very well scare him off.

However, the best reason to not get a dog with a man before you’re married is because if you break-up, it’s one less thing to fight over. The dog was a factor in Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson’s split. All of the sudden there’s a custody battle of sorts on your hands. In fact, it says in the article that animal custody cases have escalated as much as 15% in the past five years.

Don’t bring potential problems to yourself that you can control. Once he proposes and sets a wedding date, you can start thinking about how many puppies you want. Until then, you're too busy to share furry custody...no matter how cute the pooch is!

Tell me what you think! Should Mila and Ashton get a dog together?

Until next time…
