Lucy Hale Says Colton Haynes Is Only a Friend – But Is That True?

Rumors started swirling that Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale and Teen Wolf actor Colton Haynes might have something romantic going on between them. Last weekend, they made an appearance together at Mr. C in Beverly Hills. You can’t really blame anyone for thinking something might be up. They were out on a Saturday night, both nicely dressed, and Mr. C’s has a restaurant, spa, meeting space, oh, ahem, and it’s a luxury hotel.

When asked whether she was dating Colton, Lucy, 23, said “no.” But she didn’t let it end there. She added, “I’ve known him from my Privileged days, from the CW. I don’t meet a lot of genuine people in my life and he’s a special kind of person. I try to surround myself with people like that. He’s just a friend here tonight. Although, I would be very lucky to have him on my arm! We’re just friends.”

You think she’d end there, right? Nope. Lucy went on to say, “[Colton] could have anyone! He could have any young starlet. He’s so beautiful. I mean, you see what he looks like!”

Wow. That’s a lot for Lucy to say about someone who is only a friend. I know she’s dating American Horror Story actor Chris Zylka, 27. But, if I didn’t know better, I’d swear it sounds as if she likes Colton ...as more than a friend. Most women don't go on and on exhaustively about how wonderful a man is if they aren't into him.

If so, there’s nothing wrong with falling for a friend. It happens and you can’t always control what the heart wants (hearts are complicated like that). Even though she’s with Chris, Lucy’s young and things could change. Which is why if she thinks she might end up wanting to date Colton at some point, she’d be better off being mysterious and hard-to-get.

See, the way she spoke about Colton was too reverential. While definitely complimentary and sweet, saying he could have any woman he wants and is so beautiful made her sound like a groupie. I don’t write this to hurt her feelings because I think she’s well-intentioned. But, sometimes a man will hear things differently than how a woman means it. This is why she should be careful when flattering him.

Additionally, Lucy saying, “I don’t meet a lot of genuine people” erodes her “It Girl” status. For example, when on a a job interview, you don’t tell the interviewer, "I've been on dozens of interviews. No one will hire me. It’s hard finding a good job.” The interviewer will think something is wrong with you. He or she wants to hear that everyone is interested in hiring you. The same goes with a man’s perception of people in your life. Let him think it's all goodness and wonderfulness until you're sure he's serious about you.

So, what should Lucy have said when asked whether Colton and she are romantic? She simply could’ve responded, “Nope, just friends!” I keep going back to Mila Kunis and how she acted with Ashton Kutcher but hey – she got the guy she wanted! And she didn’t do so by going on and on about how great he is.

I’m curious as to whether Colton and Lucy will ever become anything down the road. If so, this is why she should position herself as the woman he has to have and not vice versa. Let him think she could get any man in Hollywood, too.

Until next time…
