Russell Brand and Geri Halliwell Bond over Sobriety – Advice for Those Who Are Single and Sober

These days, I’m seeing an increasing number of people who are sober – including famous celebrities you never would’ve guessed. These folks want nothing to do with drugs or the bottle for various reasons. If you’re single and sober, though, dating can be tricky. But, it doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

I read an article about how Russell Brand and Geri Halliwell are bonding over sobriety and yoga. Both are committed to a healthy lifestyle and have left their partying days in the past. Another similarity is how difficult their previous relationships were in terms of handling all of the drinking going on around them. They decided to look for something different this time around.

Whenever I see a celebrity couple where one person is sober and the other isn’t, I notice it doesn’t work out very well if at all. One recent example is Elisabetta Canalis and Steve-O. This isn’t necessarily because the sober person needs a sober partner. It's mostly that the sober person doesn't like being out where there’s alcohol or drugs involved. It’s always ideal if they can find someone sober so they won’t feel pressured to return to old habits or, alternatively, gather the courage not to.

Some of my clients who are sober and online dating are asked why they don’t drink. I tell them that they can answer, “Oh, just no interest in it” or “It makes me nauseous.” There’s no need to go into your true reasons especially at the outset of a relationship. Once a man knows you better, you can discuss addictions if you had any.

Keep in mind, though, that he might hold it against you someday. This can come in the form of telling you he’s worried about you driving with his children in the car. I’m not saying to keep a secret, just…be mindful of what happens when you’re honest about these matters.

On another note, one client said it makes men uncomfortable when they offer to buy her a drink and all she asks for is water. I told her to find a couple of virgin drinks she likes so she can let him order her one. It'll make him feel like he’s doing something for her. Even if you ask for a tonic with lime or virgin margarita, a man will enjoy buying you something when you first meet. This isn’t a deal breaker if you don’t – not in the slightest – but it gives him an opportunity to shine.

Finally, no matter how old you are, never let a man give you a hard time about not drinking. If he’s so concerned that you don’t, it could be it’s because he drinks quite a bit which isn’t good. In the end, if you not drinking is that much of a problem, it's not a good fit. If it’s that big of a deal to him, it might be because he has a big problem with it.

Tell me what you think! What are your thoughts on drinking and dating?

Until next time…
