Is Ryan Lochte a Mamma's Boy? Insights for Women with Men Still Attached to the Umbilical Cord

If you’ve seen any of the Olympics commercials, there are two frequently playing which shows mother’s taking on a significant role in the Olympiad’s life. There’s the tear-jerker from Procter & Gamble and the one with gymnast Shawn Johnson for Bounty. But, mom’s involvement sometimes extends into unexpected areas.

Ryan Lochte’s mother, Ike, let it be known just how close her relationship is with her son. In an interview with TODAY on July 31, she said Ryan is too busy for a relationship and goes out on one-night stands. When I first read that, I thought "Ewwwww...really? How does his mother know this? And, why is she telling everyone?" Then it hit me. Ryan Lochte is a mamma's boy.

Those of you who watch Everybody Loves Raymond know that Ray Barrone is teased for his close relationship with his mother. But, even he shied away from discussing anything about sex with Marie. The fact Ryan's mom knows details about his sex life tells me he probably has an extreme case of "grown-mamma's-boy" syndrome.

It's not unusual to find men who are close to their mothers. Especially since there are so many single mother's devoted to their children. If the father isn't around, a son takes on the paternal role in the house and becomes protective of his mother which makes them even closer.

But, what does this mean for the woman dating a mamma's boy?

Well, it depends on your tolerance level. If a mother makes comments like that, rest assured he's talking to her about your relationship. Now, if she likes you, this will work in your favor. He might seek her counsel and she'll help keep your relationship or marriage together. 

If she doesn't like you, then having a man this close to his mother could prove disastrous. She'll snark about everything from your appearance to whether you come from good stock. No matter what you do, it'll never be good enough for her son. She'll remind him of it every step of the way. She might come between your relationship and it'll be hard to not fight with your guy.

Say you have a strong support system or a large family. Her opinion won't mean as much because you'll have a lot of people to fall back on. If you don't have much family or your mother has passed, think long and hard about marrying into a family where the matriarch doesn't like you. I'm not saying don't, only that it can be a tough road.
