What Now for Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson? When a Woman Loses Her "It Girl" Because She Cheated

If you’ve been on the internet at all today, you’ve probably seen the screaming headlines about how Kristen Stewart cheated on Robert Pattinson. For awhile, people refused to believe it and blamed the tabloids for making up stories that ruined people’s lives. But, then Kristen apologized.

I’m not interested in condemning her. That angle has been covered pretty sufficiently. Of concern to me is the “what now?” for Robert and her.

Historically, Kristen has seemed Rules-y. Nothing about her screams desperate. It's obvious she hasn't pursued Robert. Her indifference drives him crazy. People can shriek about how awful The Rules are, but look at how they work. Robert could have any women he wants yet chooses the one who plays hard-to-get. She’s been his “It Girl.” Until now.

One aspect of The Rules I’ve noticed is that no matter how crazy a man is about you, you can’t cheat on him. A women is sadly mistaken if she operates under the logic of “He loves me so much I can cheat on him and get away with it.” Not so.

Even if he’s responding to The Rules and seems virtually obsessed with you, if you cheat, he’s done. A man might be happy to chase and court you. But, keep in mind he’s doing this because you’re the "It Girl." Once his mind's eye image of you is ruined, even if he stays, he won’t treat you the same.

Aside from losing the “It Girl” is the guilt that goes hand-in-hand with cheating. A lot of people contemplate infidelity when faced with another person to whom they are wildly attracted. Even if you aren’t caught, though, the guilt can be awful.

If your actions do catch up with you, then you’ve completely ruined the relationship. Instead of just ending it and moving on to someone else, you now have guilt hanging over your head that you didn’t do the right thing. You’re considered the jerk. And there’s no way around it.

In my last post about Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas, I noted The Rules for Marriage says it's over even if he only cheats once. The response I received was divided. Some agreed whereas others thought an exception should be made if children are involved. Another suggested because Melanie isn’t Rules, she should stick it out, become Rules, and see what happens.

Not everyone will agree on the right course of action. Truly, to each their own. Because I follow The Rules, though, I offer the advice that Ellen and Sherrie teach. They don’t make distinctions based on whether a couple has children or the wife played hard-to-get. It’s black and white. If he cheats once, it’s over.

The man with whom Kristen cheated, Rupert Sanders, issued a statement today apologizing to his wife, Liberty Ross, and their children for his transgressions. I don't doubt he's sorry. Public apology aside, again, under The Rules, the marriage is over.

Between the guilt, heartache, and condemnation one faces when they cheat, it’s better to leave a relationship than sneak around. There is no worse pain than when you can’t look yourself in the eye in the mirror. If the golden rule doesn’t prevail upon you in situations like these, maybe self-loathing will.

Take the poll or tell me what you think – will Kristen and Robert make it through this?

Until next time…
