Kristen Stewart Cheating Scandal Brings Up Battle of the Sexes: Should Women Play the Hand They're Dealt?

A battle of the sexes debate has started because of the Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson cheating scandal. Some say that had it been Robert who cheated, people wouldn't be as up in arms as they are. Others think the amount of heat Kristen's enduring has nothing to do with her being a woman, but because she's a well-known celeb; No one had any idea who Rupert Sanders was until now. I think there's merit to both opinions.

People are already wondering whether Kristen's indiscretion will hurt the Snow White and the Huntsman franchise and her career. I've read comments from women who acknowledge that while Kristen made a mistake, were Robert to have cheated, his career wouldn't be jeopardized. An example of this is Michael de Luca (below) who let a woman go down on him in full view at a 1998 Oscar party. He's now producing the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise.

This brings me to The Rules. Though published well over a decade ago, Ellen and Sherrie pointed out the obvious difference between men and women. When it comes to dating, they advised women not be aggressors with men. This is simply because men like to chase -- not be chased.

I acknowledge women bear the brunt of unfairness from the work place, dating, home life, etc. Though we've made a lot of advances in terms of equal rights, there are some areas of life in which we're just not on equal footing with our male counterparts. Another topic I don't have time to address here is whether we even want to be.

Before writing this post, I wondered why women, often times, take the fall harder than men do. I don't think it's because women are the "weaker sex." What I concluded is that it's because women can have babies. While empowered in the sense that we can give life, I think it also places upon us an expectation that we operate with more responsibility and integrity. When we don't, people are let down.

What I'm getting at in this message to women is that this is the hand we're dealt. When we don't tow the social lines to which we're expected to adhere, well, we must prepare ourselves for the fallout. Despite the advances we've made in equal rights, some things just haven't changed.

Kristen might recover in her career. This is Hollywood and a lot of craziness happens. Nicole Richie was arrested for a wrong-way DUI several years ago. She now has a husband, two children, and lives a very stable life. Granted, she's not a career actress. Nevertheless, she's still received a lot of attention from the paparazzi. In other words, women can recover from mistakes. But, it can be an arduous uphill battle.

Like anything, though, the little choices ultimately define one's character. If you contemplate doing something less than reputable, realize that, as a woman, you'll take more heat for it. Like it or not. Fair or unfair. These are the decisions to make when assessing the risks to take.

Tell me what you think! Is it better to play the hand your dealt as a woman when it comes to men? I really look forward to opinions from you all on this one.

Until next time...
